Prodigal Son

by Wayne Cordeiro on January 15, 2021

Today's Reading:
Genesis 37,38; Psalms 7; Luke 15

Scripture

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.” (Luke 15:17-20)

Observation

Where was the turning point? Where was the defining moment when the son that was dead came to life — the one that was lost and is now found? When was that?

  • When he finally arrived back home? When he was forgiven?
  • When he realized the feast was for him?

No…. Rather, it was at the pig trough. It was there “when he came to his senses …”

Think about it … he had all he needed in his father’s house. It had been there all along — work, pay, identity, and provision. But earlier, he wanted provision without labor. He wanted what he wanted and he got caught up in an entitled spirit. It became more about him than anyone else. He felt he deserved more…

Application

We, too, can lose our bearings while yet under our Father’s care. Like Esau, we can squander our birthright and like the prodigal, waste our estate. But, when this happens, we must return home by the same deliberate, pre-planned path the prodigal son took. We must come to our senses, and that might only come at the pig trough.

What does it mean to “come to our senses?” It is a chosen, deliberate, and radical change in our perspective. We recognize our shortfall, we plan a pathway home, and we don’t look for excuses or others to blame. Period! We put that tendency away, once and for all. We act with humility of heart. That is the only pathway back.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for the parable of the prodigal son. Whenever I get off track, may I be quick to “come to my senses” so I can find the way home. I choose to submit to Your ways. I know You will welcome me back with open arms!

Need Supervision?

How much supervision and accountability do I need? If no one is watching me, do I slack? Or do I discern what needs to be done, envision it, and move forward? That’s the difference between an “employee” and a servant-leader.

Fruit, Not Fame

God measures us not by our reputation nor by how much we know. We are not measured by showmanship, but by the sustained fruitfulness of our walk with Jesus.
