Hope

Today's Reading:
John 9,10,11

Scripture

“When he said this, He spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and applied the clay to his eyes and said to him — ‘go wash in the pool of Siloam,’ which is translated, ‘sent.’ And so he went away and washed and came back seeing.” (John 9:6)

Observation

The Scriptures will give us a brief overview of what happens, but if we will expand the event, we’ll gain insight to see more of the colors we often miss … the part that connects a miracle to everyday life and makes it human. Here, we find a blind man wanting sight and he encounters Jesus. After formulating an herbal, biodegradable eye medicine, Jesus told the man to go wash. And now comes the interesting part that we don’t have written down for us. When Jesus ordered him to go, it simply says, “he went away and washed.”

But wait! Take another look. Rewind the footage and let’s look at it frame by frame. Here’s where the time faith lies. Here’s the key. How would you feel going your way to a pool of water mud puddle covering each eye? How long did it take? How far away was the pool? We are not told, but even though it was only a few blocks away, this could feel like miles to someone who is looking like he just left a mud wrestling tournament and lost.

Here’s the rub. While going to wash, he was still blind! He had to believe though not yet seeing.

Application

There are many times when I must believe while not yet seeing. I grope forward, often in the dark, doubting even myself …. but I move forward based on the last command I received from my Master. These are the seasons that will make or break me. These are the seasons that build faith or where I fall short of faith. It’s is a season of hope. Faith is not being so easily discouraged. It’s having patience and the ability to persevere. It’s having inner peace regardless of what the world is yelling at me.

Prayer

Father, please help me to have the same faith as this blind man … a faith that is strong even when I cannot see! And even if I have to grope to find Siloam, I will do so. I will not always walk straight to it. I may have to fumble and flounder till I get there, but I will be persistent until I do!

A Modern-Day Addiction

The times … they are a-changin'! There is coming a time, and it may be right now when our overwhelming desire will be to accumulate teachers who confirm what we already believe, who speak our language, and who affirm our opinions. Especially in America, we seem addicted to affirmation.

The Delivery System

I think that I often focus more on the delivery system than what is being delivered. I guess we live in a society of fancy packaging and attractive images, regardless of content. For example, TV programs that are useless and void of true substance, but command the rapt attention of millions of viewers for “entertainment purposes.”
