Missed Opportunities

Elwin Ahu

"The foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'
But the prudent answered, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut." (Matt. 25:8-10)
There are two categories of people in life - those who "get it" and those who don't. And the ones who "get it" took the time in the present to prepare for their future. The key to this parable is hidden in the phrase "and those who were ready." No one knew the precise date of the bridegroom's return. But, notwithstanding the uncertainty of their future, five virgins wisely made preparations in the present, while five others failed to give it a second thought.

Failure to prepare today will result in missed opportunities tomorrow. It's an undeniable axiom of life. An apathetic attitude today will definitely shut the door to golden opportunities in your future. We often see life as a series of events strung together, day after day, without realizing that each day is an opportunity to gain experience, learn lessons, hone our skills for opportunities that await us in the future. How we choose to live each day will determine what we will be able to accomplish in the future.
I wonder how many golden opportune moments I've already missed along the road of life because I failed to take the time to prepare. We live in a goal-oriented, result minded society today. And it's easy to find yourself "sucked" into apathetic moods or focused on the "here and now" and fail to see what's on the horizon. Many times our future remains uncertain - out of sight, out of mind. But, I need to believe that God has the best laid plans for my life, for my marriage, for my family, for my ministry still up ahead. There are doors of opportunity that He wants me to walk through, that will reveal the future and the hope that He's promised. But, I will need the key to unlock those doors of opportune moments. I'll find the key to those doors in the preparations that I choose to make today. Today just isn't another day; it's a day that will prepare me for tomorrow. "This is the day that the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it."
Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness. Morning by morning You give me another chance to prepare myself for what You have in store for my future. May I never take today for granted, but seek to learn the lessons, to make preparations, to gain the experience I will need to unlock the doors of opportunities You have prepared for my future.
