A Lesson On Stubbornness

Aaron Cordeiro

"Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people" (Exodus 33:3)
The people of Israel received the blessing they all were looking for, but forfeited the presence of God because of their obstinate ways. Some one who is obstinate is someone who is stubborn, hard-headed, or literally stiff necked. The Lord speaks to Moses and says to allow the people to go into the promise land, but the Lord wouldn't go with them because of their sin. At first I didn't understand why the Lord wouldn't Go with them and than it hit me.

Psa 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

In the presence of God there is no darkness, and if He continued with the people sin would destroy them. Though the people were stubborn continually the Lord, is Love, and loved them so much that he pulled away from them so their sin would not destroy them.
Stubbornness may not kill, but it sure repels relationships even the relational presence of God Himself. This makes me think of why I would ever want to be stubborn in the first place? Maybe to get my way, satisfy a craving, or guard my heart from getting hurt? What ever it is that I might get stubborn about it doesn't seem one iota worth it compared to losing the presence of God.

This makes me think about personal relationships as well. Though I may get my way through stubbornness, throwing my moods around, and being hard nosed I bet it's at that moment my relationships start to pull away. So it really comes down to a choice do I want to grab to invest in sin, or God?

This morning I am pressed to investigate my every motive and agenda to see if it is something I am just stiff necked on. In my stubbornness I may get what I want but it is guaranteed I will lose the presence of my creator because he loves me too much to draw near with and sinful way in me.
Dear Lord,

Thank you for reminding me this morning to often check my motives and agendas that they are lined up with Yours. I am not where I am at in life because I got myself there, but it is Your doing in every way. I never want to forget that and I humbly lay my motives and agenda at Your feet. Please lead me, cover me, and most of all surround me with Your relationship and presence. Amen
