Christ-Like Attitude

Richard Waialeale

1 Peter 4:1-2 (NIV)
1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.
2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

How do I arm myself with the same courageous attitude and mindset as Jesus did when it came to suffering? What kind of suffering will I be in for, should I make this change?
First of all when the scripture says arm yourself, he is referring to a soldier who puts on the armor. The soldier knows he is going into battle so he prepares himself. So then the battle and suffering of this world today is simply the day to day temptations and challenges of falling prey to the things of this world. Things that are just not right in God’s sight. I must refuse to live with todays desires and fill myself with Jesus, to rid myself of any temptation.
How do I fill myself with Jesus? If I was to show you an empty tumbler and ask, “how do I get all of the air out of this tumbler?” Do I suck it out, perhaps with a vacuum and take the chance that I might break it? The only way is to fill it with something like water. If I fill the tumbler with water, now all the air is removed. The same thing is with Jesus. If I take Jesus and fill myself with God’s Word, prayer, worship, psalm, hymns and praise. If I fill myself up with Jesus, all that’s in me is Jesus. I have more of Him and less of me and less the things of this world.
Victory for us as children of God does not come by working hard to eliminate sinful habits, but rather by allowing Christ to take full possession.

Lord I pray that I be full of you in me and empty myself of the ways of this world. When the world seems to be falling a part, keep my eyes on Jesus. When circumstances overwhelm me, get back to Jesus and fill me up with Him. Amen.
