PASTORS' DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Know Your AssignmentJohn Tilton
1 Samuel 15:22-23 But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrificesas much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,he has rejected you as king.”
The Lord directed Saul to totally destroy the Amalekites. In Saul's mind, he did just that; completely destroyed the Amalekites, and spared Agag and the best of the sheep, cattle, calves and lambs, planning as he would testify later, to sacrifice them to the Lord. In his mind he was honoring the Lord ... wrong! In actuality, he disobeyed the Lord by not doing exactly what the Lord had commanded him to do. Thus, he was rejected by the Lord as King and leader.
Wow, this is sobering and scary. How often have I disobeyed what the Lord has directed me to do by His word and the inklings of the Holy Spirit speaking to me? I realize that there are times that I may skew or change the assignment that God has given me thinking that I can do it my way or falling back on God's forgiving grace. I am feeling very convicted right now as to my lack of total obedience and sticking with God's assignments and directives. I truly need to be totally obedient in what I know and therefore what I do, without compromise.
Dear Lord, I know that I can often mean well and have all the right intentions only to compromise your will and ways for my life. I know that I have often done things my way. I do and should know and do better. Please place your hand upon my life in my mind and heart, guiding and strengthening me to be obedient and to be very clear on your call on my life and my assignments. Please lead and guide me not to live fall into double standard living, but to stay on the track you've placed me on.
