The Mission of God

Richard Waialeale

Matthew 26:39-42 (NIV)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.
41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
When reading the Bible, we should study it looking for God’s mission for God’s people as a framework to understanding the larger scope of Scriptures. When reading it looking for God’s mission, the interpretation of all Scriptures compels us to ask questions in a different fashion from, “Where does God fit into the story of my life?” To where is my little life fit into this great story of God’s mission. We are used to asking, “What kind of mission does God have for my life?” But instead we should look for were do we each fit in what God wants for his mission?” Reading the Bible to interpret Scriptures in light of the mission of God moves me to see the big picture of God’s mission through God’s people in their engagement with God’s world for the sake of the whole of God’s creation as it is revealed in the Bible.
Jesus teaches me to see God’s mission and how I fit in the grand scheme of things.

I am inspired to interpret the reading of all the Scriptures in light of the mission of God. Like an athlete maintaining a level of conditioning to be effective for the good of the team. It’s not about what kind of mission God has for me, but more of understanding what kind of me is God’s mission for God’s people in God’s world. My desire is to see the whole Bible as God’s mission and where do I fit in the grand narrative of God’s big picture of things. I can broaden my perspective for the church and community, by seeing God’s mission for humanity and how big a God we serve. In short, God’s mission for the people is to be a light to the world, loving one another, and learning to live in obedience and teaching it to the world.
Father help me see your Word in light of Your Mission, for what you have for me and how I fit of the grand scheme of what you are doing in this world, In Jesus Name I Pray. Amen.
