Destroy Pride

Tim Savage

"We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
I wondered what was going on here in Corinthians as Paul felt the need to defend his authority. There was a minority in Corinth that slandered him and questioned him saying that he was bold in his writings, but had no authority in person. Chapter 10 is Paul's response to that.

We, like Paul, are weak, but we don't have to fashion human plans and methods to win our battles. The Life Application Bible notes say, "God's mighty weapons are available to us as we fight against Satan's 'stongholds.' The Christian must choose whose methods to use, God's or the world's. Paul assures us that God's mighty weapons - prayer, faith, hope, love, God's Word, the Holy Spirit - are powerful and effective (see Ephesians 6:13-18)!

"These weapons can break down the proud human arguments against God and the walls that Satan builds to keep people from finding God." Our pride keep us from true relationship with Him because we too often choose our own ways, rather than God's, to live our lives or solve our problems. Our selfish ways can't and won't lead to true peace or answers, only the God's mighty weapons will prevail.
Choosing His way means destroying our own pride and submitting to His will and so often I find that I don't even notice that my pride has quietly crept in to my thinking. I have to really examine my motives to see that I have selfish reasons behind my behavior. When I can rip those attitudes out like weeds in my yard, then, and only then can God work in my life. And, then, and only then, can the strongholds of the enemy in human reasoning and false arguments be knocked down. I also have to capture inappropriate and rebellious thoughts bring them under the obedience of God.
Dear Heavenly Father,

On this Good Friday, 3 days before Easter, I lay down my pride and ask that You take command of my life. Help me to use the mighty weapons You have given me, instead of the weak human methods I so often resort to.

Thank You for the gift of Your precious Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins. We celebrate Your power that brought Him back to life on Easter morning.

In Jesus name,
