Humpty Dumpty

John Tilton

Acts 12:21-23 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
King Herod understandably as a King possessed authority. However, he took his authority too far and abbused it. At the point where he was incorrectly given acknowlegement that should have been God's, his taken what was not meant for him resulted in his demise. Even with the authority given to him by position, the message here is that when we covet, take or accept what is not meant for us, we stand to suffer the ramifications.
King Herod reminds me of Humpty Dumpty who sat on the wall. We all know the story of his great fall. I need to be sure that whatever authority God gives me, that I steward it well and give honor and acknowledgement appropriately. When we receive gifts, talents, authority, honor, accolades; do I give honor and glory to God and those that deserve the honor if it is misdirected to me? I do not want to be lifting myself higher and higher setting myself up for a big fall. It's interesting that this week we are studying humility this week in the Irresistible Church. When we set ourselves up and take glory that is not meant for ourselves, we open the door for pride to grow and big falls to take place.
Dear Lord, May I always given glory, honor and credit to the appropriate person it is due; especially you. May I also remember my words to people and how the will perceive it, given my the position and authority you blessed me with.
