PASTORS' DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Preparation Determines PlayJohn Tilton
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
Paul encourages the Corinthians about a important principle of life and endeavor, and that is how their preparation which includes training and discipline will determine their success or as some would say, how the race is run or the game played. If they wanted to succeed in their calling, they were to do it intentionally and strategically. An important thing was to discipline themselves in character and personal attributes; even if it meant pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zone and status quo.
I sitting here at this moment producing a national event and just finished sound check and dress rehearsal. I anticipate and wonderful success. However, I don't believe it could have been done without the preparation that started years ago with the artists training in their craft, through today where all of the artists and elements were put together and rehearsed. I am also reminded that my success in my studies, work and endeavors always were based on my training, discipline and preparation. Our Lord, calls us not to take important matters lightly, but to study, train and prepare so that we can accomplish all that He calls us to do. I know that I will play the game as best as I've prepared, and so to with my relationship and call to obedience with God's will and assignment on my life.
Dear Lord, thank you for the principle of preparing myself to the best of my ability to serve you. Please continue to guide me to be intentional, strategic and obedient in serving you.
