In Training!

Rod Shimabukuro

Hebrews 5:13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
The recipients of this letter were noted as slow to learn, contributing to their immature relationship with Jesus. Instruction from wise, mature teachers are necessary and important to one’s spiritual growth. But constant use of the Scriptures, not just in talk, but in practice and lifestyle will mature one’s faith. This was certainly a theme in Hebrews where Christians are warned and exhorted to strengthen and develop their faith in Christ.

But knowing Christ is developed through training. Training of the heart, developing faith in who Jesus is - higher, better, greater than anyone, who gives us HIs righteousness. When we begin to understand that we have Christ righteousness (not of our righteousness through performance or works), we will be able to better train ourselves to distinguish between good and evil. The faith and righteousness we have, is found IN JESUS. So relax Rod... and keep training!
I must remember that my training is to develop my discernment, not to establish my righteousness, earn favor with God or perform better as a Christian.

My behavior as a Christian is important - to be a witness to others. But I must never confuse my right standing with God - based on my behavior, good works, performing well as a Christian.

I am IN TRAINING, reading, meditating, studying the Scriptures so that I may be constantly using them to live out His Word. Solid food for my life will be gained through using, living the Scripture. To NOT live what I know means that I am an under nourished and immature Christian.

To live differently means to read, meditate and study His Word more intently - more deliberately. I need to spend more time searching and meditating on the Word - then applying what I know. I’m still working on hiding the Word in my heart - memorizing Scripture.
Jesus - You are the Word of LIfe! Please continue to help me train, using what I know of You, learn from You - to be a mature man of God! Thank you for being my Trainer, Coach and GOD!
