A Higher Calling

John Tilton

1 Samuel 2:29-33 29Why do youscorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’30“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.31The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,32and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.33Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.
Eli's sons by their birth as sons of Eli were given a mantle of leadership as priests chosen by God. However, they did not honor the call on their lives by living lives of good character and stewarding their position of priestly leadership including the provisions of God. They did not honor God in following and being obedient to His will and priestly directives. Instead, they chose to put themselves first in taking the raw meat before it was customarily boiled before the fat was burned. They also failed in their morally by sleeping with the women at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Although chosen by God, they squandered away the higher calling on their lives with their attitude of entitlement and moral failure. Thus, God would treat them with disdain, cutting short their strength and anointing as priests including death.
For all of us privileged to be in ministry full time or serving as volunteers, God has truly called us to a higher calling. It is our responsibility to steward our blessings well. If we fail by becoming entitled or in our moral character, we fail in our example and stand the probability of losing our effectiveness and higher calling to serve the Lord. We often forget that people watch us and that it's not what we do on the platform but what is seen in the hallways of life.
Lord, please keep me humble that I may appreciate and steward what you've given me and walk in the higher calling of moral character I need to example in my life. May I walk in the higher calling you have on my life.
