Incline Your Heart to God

Marcus Sanders

Then David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you."(1 Sam. 17:37)
Not one man in the military had the courage to accept the Goliath’s challenge. Not even King Saul, who was the tallest of all the men, could example to his men true courage. I think in everyone's mind was the thought, "What if I loose the challenge the consequences is slavery for our people. I don't want to have this burden on my life". These men facing the Philistine have in the past battle won victories. They were courageous men willing to lay down their lives for the cause. United they were strong but as individuals they were not as strong. However God had primed David for such a time as this. He was like a Samson who had courage and strength to battle all of the Lord's enemies. But strength doesn’t come from long hair; it comes from the Spirit of God. It was God's Spirit that came upon Samson that made him mighty in battle. This is the same for David. God Spirit on his life made him fearless and courageous in battle for his sheep. The size of the attacking animal didn’t matter if it meant to protect his flock. What was David’s secret to be endowed with such power? His heart was inclined towards God.I'm amazed that King Saul put a Nation on the line using David as the Campion of Israel. He was the youngest of all men, the smallest of men and the least experienced in war of all men. Did he have a backup plan if David was to loose? I think he was stressed out in a stalemate position. Anyone who would step up would be some ray of hope for him.
It is refreshing to be around believers who are courageous. Many of the Evangelists like Billy Graham, Charles Spurgeon, and Dwight L. Moody were people who move forward in spite of fear or opposition. When I’m around courageous people, can do people, and faithful people, there's an energizing factor that all things are possible. There's an ambiance of faith, confidence and courage when Jesus is in the midst. But there is a multiplying power increase when I around others who are courageous in battle. My limitations are changed to His possibilities. What can I learn from David’s life that made him so courageous? He kept his heart inclined toward God. No matter what giants I face victory will come if I keep my heart inclined toward God. The same Holy Spirit who equipped Samson, Samuel, David and Jesus is the same Spirit in me.
Father, show me the steps I need to take in this season. When Goliath comes on the scene I will be courageous to battle. You are my fortress and strength O God. For Your glory alone, amen.
