Preparing for the Future

Richard Waialeale

Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NIV)
4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Jeremiah was born a priest but function as a prophet when he received his call from God. Even though Jeremiah felt inadequate to God’s call for his life, God brought him back to the path laid out for him. The first thing Jeremiah does is he confirms his call in verse 11, when the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Our call from God is confirmed through our daily devotions. There were times in Jeremiah’s life when he would question his call because of circumstances beyond his control as it says in verse 19 - this wasn’t going to be easy - Jeremiah 1:19 (NIV) ”They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you," declares the Lord.“ It’s still God’s call for your life. So what do I do to prepare if I sense God calling me into ministry?
There are 3 things God says to posses His call:
1. Set up a plan - God says you’ve got to plan for the future. God plans so we must plan, and He has a plan for your life. If you don’t plan it, somebody else will. The future belongs to the person who prepares for it.
2. Stay in the Word - We’re going to be in a battle and the Bible or the Sword of the Spirit, is your instruction manual for conflict and for the battles of life.
3. Step out in Faith - Faith is an action.

Challenge yourself to make three commitments:

1. I'm going to spend time praying and planning for next year. Set up a plan. I'm going to set some goals -- some spiritual goals.
2. I make a commitment to stay in the Word. Make a time. Make a commitment to increase the time spent daily in God's Word.
3. Make a commitment to step out in faith. Join a small group. Get involved somewhere in a ministry. Begin giving of your financial resources. Share your faith with others.

Set up a plan, stay in the Word, step out in faith. God says, then I guarantee your success.

My prayer is that we be men and women of conviction and character and compassion and communion and courage. May we possess the future. We know, Lord, You have great things in store for each person this next year but it's not automatic. We must prepare to possess what You have promised. I pray that today we would recommit ourselves.
