Bread Of Life

Richard Waialeale

John 6:48 (NIV)
48 I am the bread of life.

John 6:53 (NIV)
53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

If there is anything that most religions have in common, it is that they all seek to earn their way to heaven. God created us with eternity in mind. God placed eternity in our hearts (Ecc. 3:11), but there’s nothing we can do to earn our way to heaven, because of sin. So when Jesus uses this metaphor of him being the bread of life, many could not handle his teaching and left. Others needed more and stuck around.
Bread is a basic dietary staple food and was used from the time of Moses (Manna) till the New Testament. You could live on bread and water alone. Jesus used this referring not to our physical life, but eternal life. He was teaching the Jews to think of the spiritual realm and get their minds off the physical need.
What Jesus was saying is He is the spiritual bread that brings eternal life, and when I place my faith in Him, I am giving away my sins to him and he in return places his righteousness in me. Jesus satisfies our hunger and thirst for righteousness. He is our Bread of Life.
Lord I pray for the forgiveness of my sins and that I believe You are the spiritual bread of life. Thank you for loving me and for dying on the cross. In Your Holy Name I Pray. Amen.
