More Then Spoken, But Seen

John Tilton

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This section of chapter 13 centers on Peter's impending denial of Jesus when Jesus would be falsely accused. Peter states that he would lay down his life for Christ, probably meaning it at the time; only later to deny Christ three times and thus fail in his stated intent and promise. Jesus teaches us here that it is truly the love we example in our lives that will testify to our relationship with Him and our love for one another; rather then great words and intent with no follow through. It's often said that "more is caught then taught." I like the fact that it is more then spoken, but rather what is seen in our actions. Thus, like Peter, we can say all the right things and have heartfelt intent. Yet, what will our actions be when we are tested. Will we be able to example the love of Christ when people treat us unfairly, when we are falsely accused, when things of value are on the line. Are we willing to take risks to example love for one another through our actions which testifies to Christ within us. Would we risk our welfare for the love of others?
Another great heart check from God for me in reminding me that the best example of Christ in me is my love for others that go beyond words, but more so in my actions and deeds, especially when what I am called to do goes beyond my comfort zone or puts me at risk. I am reminded that people are more influenced by what they see of my actions rather then what I say. Even now as I write with heartfelt intent, will my actions later today commensurate with my words i loving others as Christ calls me to?
Dear Lord, please example in me the love you call me to extend to others; especially when the others perhaps have been a challenge to me or when what I value may be put at risk. Please guide me to be cognizant of my words when i have the opportunity to turn my words into action the examples you in me. Truly, may others see your through my love toward others.
