We all Agree!

Micah Simpson

"Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgement." (1 Corinthians 1:10)
Whenever it gets to my ears that there is division in the ranks, it becomes a heavy burden on my heart. So I can imagine when Chloe's people got Paul on skype, and told him that there were divisions, he probably felt the same kind of disheartening angst. Because as Christians, as saints, as those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, unity and oneness is one of the basic qualities that comes out of a loyalty to the gospel.

Look what Paul instructs, he tells us to "be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgement," which is a good adjustment back to a christian basic of unity. Which should be a basic that we constantly come back to.

This is probably why the church exploded with Peter and the apostles, because it says that they were with one mind, acts 2:46, and were of one heart and soul. Acts 4:32
I guess because I grew up in church, and I have seen many a church member divided, it breaks my heart all the more to see divisions exist in the church.

Division is not a little thing!

It rips people apart, it hurts, it is fierce and sharp and it leaves a massive trail of bloodshed. Quarrels are the exact opposite of having the same mind. Division is the exact opposite of being in the same judgement. And when we cannot live in harmony and love for one another, putting aside differences and arguments and opinions and continuing in the grace of Christ, it's not long before the church becomes a place where no one wants to be.

For the same reason that I would not want to live in North Korea, why would it be fun to be in a church with people who care more about their selfish opinions than they do about what Christ did on the cross.

Paul gives his brief tirade on baptism, saying it doesn't matter who the heck you got baptized by, it doesn't matter he says, "Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel!"

And how many times have I seen, a little quarrel about this or that, when really it doesn't matter if it is causing us to be derailed from being of one mind and one heart.

I have found myself in the midst of dumb little quarrels, and this morning is a great reminder that it's not my opinion that matters, it's being unified as Christ's body that matters.
Lord, I pray that I would not focus on trying to stop quarreling, but that I would focus on serving others, and building others up. I pray that my heart would be one to bring respect and honor to all those that God places in my life. Lord help me to care about people more than my views, help me to care more about relationships than about silly little arguments.

I pray that I would always remember that division brings self destruction and not enemy destruction. I pray that we would be a church that stands together, that lives together, that fights together, that fearlessly preaches the name of Christ together.
