PASTORS' DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Against All OddsTim Savage
Israel then mustered its army, set up supply lines, and marched out for battle. But the Israelite army looked like two little flocks of goats in comparison to the vast Aramean forces that filled the countryside! 1 Kings 20:27
In these 2 battles in 1 Kings 20 the Israelite army was completely outnumbered and should have been wiped out by the forces of King Ben-Hadad of Aram, but in both cases God proved his might and power by soundly defeating the enemy. I can visualize the 2 little flocks of goats and the huge advancing packs of wolves that covered the countryside. The enemy must have thought that victory was assured, that there was no way they could be beaten by such a small and insignificant group. The Israelites had one thing that the Arameans didn’t – God. There are seasons we all experience that seem like we are faced with insurmountable challenges, like the enemy has us surrounded and defeat is guaranteed. We may be dealing with divorce or family problems or possible financial collapse or failing health, whatever it is, it is very real and very scary. No doubt, the soldiers in the little goat flocks felt the same, they saw the on-coming enemy, like something out of a Lord of the Rings movie, filling the horizon, they knew they had no hope of survival, but their creator, their Lord and Savior, had other plans.
When facing collapse and failure I must remember that God has other plans for me; that I can be just like the Israelite warriors faced with annihilation, that God can snatch me from the jaws of defeat and give me a testimony of victory that could only come from Him. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” We will all face debilitating challenges; it’s our faith in our Shepherd Father that will deliver us from defeat.
Dear Heavenly Father, I am thankful for Your love and mercy. Please help me to grow my faith so that I will be unshakeable in tough times. May I have peace knowing that You hold my future and my hope no matter what comes my way. In Jesus name, Amen
