Self Control

Richard Waialeale

Proverbs 13:3 (NIV)
3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

Proverbs 15:4 (NIV)
4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 15:7 (NIV)
7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools.

The greatest destroyer of relationships is an uncontrolled tongue. What you say can make you happy or sad- healthy or unhealthy - wise or foolish - build people up or tear people down. God says when you've got a problem with your mouth it's not really your mouth. It's your heart. Out of the heart the man speaks.
The mouth simply reveals what's in my heart. It is the window to my soul. It is the displayer of my character. How and what I say shows what I'm really like on the inside.
Jesus said in Matt. 15:18 "What comes out of the mouth comes from the heart."
Words reveal our character and they display the condition of my heart. When you go to the doctor the first thing he says is, "Stick out your tongue." Somehow by looking at your tongue he's going to figure out what's going on inside of you. Or he takes a thermometer and puts it in your mouth -- hopefully. Somehow by taking the temperature in your mouth he can figure out if you're sick or well.

The world's idea of self control is this -- self in control. I call the shots, I'm my own boss, I do my own thing, I'm Mr. Big, I do what I want to do. That is a guarantee for failure.
Real self-control, as God says, is not self in control but self under control. Under the control of God I find self control with my mouth, and every other area that I didn't think possible.
James 1:26, "Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn't control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn't worth much."
The only way I can control my tongue is by letting Jesus Christ control your heart, step by step, on a daily basis.
Lord walk closely with me in this season as I choose my words wisely - In Jesus Name I Pray. Amen.
