Fading Into Darkness

Richard Waialeale

Ecclesiastes 1:13-14 (NIV)
13 I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men!
14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

If there is ever a moment of midlife crises or falling into depression, then this must be it. Then, if there is ever a time a person needs to get closer to God, now is the time. Looking back at all our accomplishments, achievements, success and victories - without Jesus in the center of our hearts, life can feel meaningless. Ecclesiastes is a book for anyone chasing after life’s meaning by seeking it from worldly things, temporal human efforts. The perspective is taken from a person who may know of God and may at one time had a relationship with God, but either lost or faded away from that intimate relationship with Him. What I’m reading is what happens when I go side ways and fade away from God.
In the end, what really matters is, my faith in God is the only way to find personal meaning. When you think about our life hear on earth, life is brief and ultimately worthless without God. I must to focus on an eternal God instead of temporary pleasure. Only Jesus can heal, bring comfort, wholeness and peace into my life - not any of the riches of this world (2:7), drunkenness (2:3), building a great church (2:4), or all the success (2:9). Only Jesus.

Father I pray that Jesus is all I really need when Jesus is all I’ve got. Draw me close to you and open my eyes to the true value of my relationship in Christ alone. In His Name I Pray. Amen.
