A Diligent Example

John Tilton

2 Thessalonians 3:6-10 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away fromevery believer who is idle and disruptiveand does not live according to the teachingyou received from us.For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you,nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we workednight and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. For even when we were with you,we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to workshall not eat.”
Paul encouraged the believers to be mindful of the influence people have on one another by association, relationship and time spent together. We've heard the sayings of "Sleep with dogs get up with fleas." or "birds of a feather, flock together." Paul reminds the people that people do in fact influence one another by way of association and time spent. There are many testimonies of people who have fallen into crime or made life-mistakes due to the influence of people they've associated with. Instead, Paul reminds the people of the example they were called to be as believers living a life of exampling Christ; not to be entitled, expectant and needy. Paul beseeched them that their call of being followers of Christ was to example diligence in their work and efforts.
These scriptures are a great affirmation when we are busy and running hard with an intent of being an example and influence of who Christ is molding us to be as we serve Him. Yet, a key to prevent burnoout and neglect of our loved ones is the also seek balance, as a balanced and diligent life is the example that will help and influence others. We must also remember not to be distracted by others that may be prone to idleness and disruption by influencing us in matters and things that take us away from our assignment, our call and what is priority.
Dear Lord, thank you for the numerous reminders of what will help and guide me in being successful and becoming an example of diligence and an influence for you and who you are in my life.
