Peter's Final Words

Tim Savage

I am warning you ahead of time, dear friends. Be on guard so that you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen. 2 Peter 3:17-18
Peter’s Final Words – that holds great weight, an importance and significance; this is one of the disciples’ last communication to those that he loved and cared for. If we stood next to a grandparent or parent in their final moments and they told us what was most important to them, surely we would listen and obey. Out of our love and adoration we would make sure their request was fulfilled. Here Peter gives us a parting instruction – more so, a warning – he says to look out for those that would try to sway us from the truth, those that would compromise our holiness and resolve for beliefs and a lifestyle that is accepted by unbelievers. Peter says that we must not lose our secure footing. The wicked will try to undermine our foundation, they will dig at and pick under our solid rock and have us cave in to sin and behavior that causes our faith to crumble and we end up melding in to look just like the rest of the crowd. He says, instead, we need to learn more about our Heavenly Father, study more about His love, grace and jealous nature. We must be growing in our faith and our personal holiness; we need to be improving in our attitudes, selflessness and discipline. These are the things Peter felt were most important. This is what he said to us in his last words. We should listen carefully and follow his instruction.
I must continue to learn more about my Creator and God. This will help me to recognize Him and also recognize the tricks and deceit of the enemy. Peter has warned us and I need to heed that warning. I can’t sit back idly and expect a smooth ride to heaven. Things will get much worse before they get better. I have to be prepared to stand firm and draw lines, people will not always love us, in fact, we have to be ready for people to hate us for what we stand for. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to make this more than just a lesson for today, help me to apply it to my life and change me from the inside out. I pray for strength to withstand the pressures to conform and wisdom and discernment to know Your will. In Jesus name, Amen
