What's that Smell?

Rod Shimabukuro

"Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." (John 11:39)
Lazarus had been sick and died. His sisters, Mary and Martha, were distraught. By the time Jesus had come to Lazarus' tomb, Martha describes the stench of death and it must have paralleled her disheartened faith. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, bringing life and eliminating the odor of death!

When something of life dies, decay and an odor will soon follow.
I'm struck by a simple analogy in my mind and heart today, through this passage. When death occurs, there will be an odor that verifies that there is no longer life. I feel like the Holy Spirit is telling me that when a character of life within me dies, I will give off an odor that affects others.

Decaying character will give off a nasty smell!!

When love within me dies and turns into anger, bitterness or unforgiveness, I will give off a stench that will affect others. When faith and courage within me dies, unbelief, cynicism and bad attitudes will give off a deathly odor. Today, I want to live differently by choosing to allow Jesus to bring life to the character traits in me that I allow to die and give off ungodly odors. My mind and heart is renewed by this analogy and I must choose not to allow the fruit of the Spirit character to die within me!
Dear Daddy God! I'm so sorry for giving you a bad name, for being hypocritical and not representing the aroma of LIFE well. Thanks for Your love, forgiveness and correction. Today I choose to LIVE and smell up my heart and surroundings with Christ-character aroma of LIFE!
